James Kingston Ifearnán

James Ifearnán is the first reincarnation of Freyja, Goddess of Darkness. He's the antihero protagonist of the Down to Hell series, and returns in Year5k as Virna, Angel of Eclipse, taking the role of Tyriel's enthralled pawn in the fight against Ivory.

Appearance

Jimmy is a young man appearing anywhere between 19 and 25 depending on the lighting, how much sugar he's had lately, and if he's using glamour. His hair, nails, and irises are all stained a bright crimson from his powerful magic, and the same magic runs in his veins in imitation of blood. Due to being an Asozhan his skin is a sort of very lightly mottled greyish-tan, heavily desaturated even with the magic roaring beneath.

He's covered in scars and strange injuries of all sorts thanks to his very overactive healing factor that occasionally heals while a weapon or salt bullet is still in his body. For this reason he can't go near a metal detector or else the ten bullets Eliza left in his head would set it off. Across his stomach and going down his left leg is a massive saltwater burn that's never healed properly like the rest of his salt wounds, but it's the largest one he has and one of the only marks on him he tries to hide even as Ifearnán.

Throughout the three main books in the Down to Hell series his favourite outfit changes several times, but the most iconic one is a red hoodie several sizes too large for him, baggy jeans with the legs rolled up, and the same sneakers he escaped from the lab wearing. As well as this he always has his pendant somewhere on him even if it's not visible; As Ifearnán he wears it below his hoodie; as Lucas it's turned around 180 degrees and hangs down his back under his shirt and ponytail; and as Blake the arrowhead is taken off the snakechain, put on a leather strap, and worn like an armband where it's safe. After being reincarnated as Yury he gives the pendant to Eliza, but even at Ethanol he develops a habit of wearing something around his neck for the comfort, like his dog tags or stolen jewellery.

Reincarnations

Freyja, Goddess of Darkness

Freyja was the creation of Ivory, after he grew jealous of Tye's new creations, the Diatian gods. Whilst the Diatians were made out of dark magic, Ivory [and consequently Freyja] were of white magic instead, leading to Freyja being untouchable when it came to Tye trying to undo Ivory's efforts, due to the repelling effect of both types of magic at the atomic level. Out of a mix of worry and pity, Tye made Freyja an honorary Diatian with the hope she'd do as told and not touch her own magic, being the only kid god and one who was also very good at following orders.

However, over time Ivory began to view Freyja as a daughter of sorts, the first time he could recall feeling any sort of positive emotion like that. Not only did these new emotions change Ivory's entire personality and his goal in the eternal fight against Tye, but it also led to him figuring out Tye's plans before Freyja had and attempting to warn her.

Freyja didn't get the warning, growing up being told that Ivory was as evil as his title, being read dozens of stories to scare her away from interacting with the angel should she ever come in contact with him. So when he tried to warn her she ignored it and took it as a trick, only for Tye to accuse her of dealing with Ivory and using her magic against the other Diatians, which led to her painful destruction at the hands of Tye and Vamor.

Ifearnán

Before the start of the first Down to Hell book, a delusional scientist called Maxwell Greyheim is working to devise a way to create the first true artificial being, a Godlezh, traditionally a servant to a Diatian, of whom Maxwell believes he's the reincarnated form of one. Maxwell undertakes four experiments with living subjects to test parts of the procedures needed, before hiring a group of researchers to follow his written instructions and do the hard work on his behalf. The procedure involves the murder of a human, and then the replacing of their soul with a new one plucked from Spring. A young man named Damien Lucius Kearney is selected as the ideal candidate for the procedure, and he's murdered with a metal rounders bat to the back of the head while walking home through the forest, drunk, on his 27th birthday, before being dragged back to the lab.

Unfortunately, neither Maxwell nor the other researchers had control of who's soul they grabbed from Spring, and they inadvertently managed to put the fractured and shattered soul of Freyja into this weak human body that was not biologically designed to hold magic. From the second Jimmy woke up his body was struggling to handle things, his skin physically cracking like glass from the sheer amount and power of his new magic that he had no idea how to control. This led one of the researchers, Britain, to have a one-of-a-kind pendant commissioned from a powerful enchanter to try and negate at least some of the damage.

Britain treats Jimmy like a son of sorts, refusing to restrain him at Maxwell's requests, until the day comes for Maxwell to see the fruits of his labour as he shows up at the lab. He talks down to Jimmy, pissed he's not subservient, only for Jimmy to fight back and nearly injure Maxwell with an uncontrolled burst of magic. Maxwell's furious and orders Jimmy “broken” until he behaves, a task Britain refuses to take part in even with one of the other researchers needing the money from the completion of their work to pay for medical care for his daughter. Jimmy's eventually traumatised by two months of straight psychological torture, unable to sleep or use magic from lack of sugar. Maxwell comes by again and this time deems the procedure a success when Jimmy won't even look up from the floor, promising payment the next day when he comes to take Jimmy off for good. Britain's the only one whose morals are still at least somewhat untarnished by the whole thing, and in the middle of the night he unlocks Jimmy's chains with magic and leaves one of the ground-floor windows open just enough for an emaciated demon to slip through, which after mentally coming to terms with escape he does, running off into the city to get as far away from the lab as he can.
